Writing of Implementation Plan and Special Issue Contributions
Travel Home
The second All Hands Meeting of the Island Systems Integration Consortium (ISIC) builds on the success of previous ISIC meetings where the community identified unresolved interdisciplinary research questions in Galápagos biology, geology, and climatology. This meeting aims to accomplish several goals, including:
- Solidify a list of interdisciplinary grand challenges for island system research in Galapagos and elsewhere.
- Develop a community implementation plan for addressing those challenges.
- Solicit contributions to a special journal issue on the state of research into the grand challenges for the Galápagos and other islands systems.
The meeting will consist of plenary presentations, breakout sessions, and community brainstorming, as well as a poster session to communicate recent research. Outcomes from this meeting will include the Implementation Plan and contributions to the special journal issue. We expect to cover participants' transportation (flight or current federal mileage rate), double-occupancy lodging costs, breakfasts, two lunches, and a banquet dinner.

Transport from Airport to Hotel
There is not a shuttle run by the hotel to transport people from the airport. As such, we recommend using Uber or Lyft (approximate cost: $35-$50) or to take a taxi. For Uber and Lyft, we also recommend having both apps on your device as the availability of drivers for each company can vary throughout the day. If you can carpool with other ISIC attendees, we encourage you to do so.
Walking from the Hotel to the Meeting on Day 1
Please see the agenda for the meeting. A map is provided on page 5 with a QR code to scan for an interactive map. The morning talks will be in the Crater Lake North and South Rooms of the EMU building (purple pin on the map). It is a short walk from the hotel with one major road crossing. Finding the meeting room can be a bit confusing so we recommend giving yourself an extra 15 minutes on Day 1.
Safety
In general, Eugene is a very safe community and we do not anticipate safety concerns for participants as they walk around the city. Like many cities, please be aware that Eugene does have a homeless population, but this population does not usually pose a safety concern. Due to the many active bus routes in Eugene, we recommend that participants avoid jaywalking for their own safety.
If an emergency situation does arise, the phone number for emergency assistance in the United States is 911. This number can be used for any emergency. In the case of a medical emergency, Eugene hosts two very good hospitals and the meeting organizers can help you get access to care, if necessary (see the agenda for organizer's contact information).
Reimbursement Instructions:
If you are traveling to the meeting and have not yet filed your request for reimbursement, please do so now. If you have not yet booked your flights, please do so asap! Once your travel is arranged, please submit a travel reimbursement request form, found here: IIDS Expense Claim. Once you've submitted your claim, you can anticipate receiving communication from Mollyann Jones, who will manage the reimbursement process for the University of Idaho.
